Position Description:

The Director of Operations (DOO) plays a critical role in the administration of the organization through the oversight of Nyaya’s US operations and as the primary organizational administrator outside of Nepal. The DOO will work closely with the US and Nepal teams to help manage and respond to daily operational needs of the organization. This position will include elements of team management, strategic planning, development and finance, and requires a commitment to social justice work and an excitement to work in a dynamic team environment.

Overview of responsibilities:

1. Oversee all support functions of Nyaya Health’s US operations, including oversight of all ongoing programs and initiatives, the recruitment and management of volunteer US-based staff, and the management of Nyaya’s budgetary and financial operations. (40%)

2. Work with Nyaya Board of Directors and volunteer staff to design and implement a fundraising strategy including grants, capital campaigns, social networking and individual fundraising drives. The DOO will also be responsible for cultivating and maintaining relationships with donors, including individuals, foundations and organizations. (30%)

3. Act as primary liaison between Nyaya’s US-based Nepal-based teams, ensuring fluid communication, regular updates via email and conference calls, and support in any and all functions the Nepal team requires. (20%)

4. Coordinate relationships with key partner organizations in the global health delivery community to enhance opportunities for collaboration. (10%)

Specific responsibilities:

1. Oversee all support functions of the US-based team. These may include, but are not limited to:strategic planning, including development of annual and 5-year work plans;
a. management of ongoing programs and coordination of development of new initiatives;
b. oversight and management of volunteer staff in the US and Nepal;
c. development and implementation of fundraising strategy for Nyaya programs, including coordination of Grants team and reporting to funders;
d. coordination of finances and budgetary planning for US operations;
e. management of marketing and publicity of Nyaya’s work, including regular reporting to supporters via email updates and annual reports.

2. Maintain fluid communication between US and Nepal teams including, but not limited to:coordination and moderation of regular team conference calls and email discussions;
a. documentation and archiving of organizational protocols, discussions and decisions;
b. organization of annual Board of Directors meetings;
c. management of Nyaya online presence including oversight of email accounts, listservs, and online tools.

3. Uphold Nyaya’s philosophy and praxis of transparency both for internal team operations and external reporting of Nyaya’s work.

4. Write and submit to the Board of Directors a formal analysis of organizational work, on a semi-annual basis, to determine how Nyaya can better organize its activities to achieve its mission.

5. Collaborate with like-minded organizations in the global health and social justice fields to share Nyaya’s work and learn from the work of other organizations in similar contexts.

6. Together with the Executive Director, and as liaisons of the Board of Directors, actively work to expand and implement Nyaya’s vision.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. High level of initiative, commitment and passion for Nyaya’s mission
2. Excitement and ability to work in team-based organizational culture interfacing with many team members and stakeholders
3. Entrepreneurial and creative spirit and ability to work independently
4. Experience in management, development and fundraising, strategic planning and finance
5. Knowledge and understanding of global health trends
6. Experience living or traveling in resource-poor settings, especially South Asia and Nepal
7. Willingness to work on an atypical work schedule, including outside normal business hours
8. Comfort in and/or willingness to learn multiple online communication tools
9. Significant availability online via email, Skype and/or chat functions regularly throughout business day and in off-hours as required by time differences

1. Bachelors degree minimum, graduate training preferred (e.g. MPH, MBA, MPA)
2. Minimum 1 year commitment, though 2 years strongly preferred
3. Availability to begin work in winter 2010 with ability to travel to Nepal for one month during winter 2010 for training
4. Willingness to relocate to Boston metropolitan area for duration of employment
5. We are unfortunately unable to sponsor visas for this position due to the small size and capacity of our organization.

About Nyaya Health

Nyaya Health Mission Statement
Nyaya Health is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working with communities in Nepal and the Nepali Ministry of Health and Population to develop healthcare services in the poor, western regions of the country. Our mission is two-fold:

1. To develop healthcare capacity for free community-based healthcare in rural Nepal; and
2. To establish and disseminate a scalable model of healthcare delivery in regions affected by poverty, isolation, war and neglect.

Where we work
Achham is one of the poorest districts in South Asia and has been severely affected by war and poverty. It is home to 250,000 people who previously had no doctor, and who invited Nyaya Health’s organizers to work towards the development of a new public health system in cooperation with the Nepali Ministry of Health and Population. The district suffers from some of the highest maternal and child mortality rates in South Asia and has a per capita income less than $1 per day.
