Nyaya Health Summer Internship, 2010
JOB DESCRIPTION
The job description for the Summer Intern at Bayalpata Hospital is wide-ranging in its scope of responsibilities, requiring a great degree of adaptability given the impoverished and resource deprived circumstances in which Nyaya Health works. Bayalpata Hospital opened in June 2008, bringing the first two doctors in a region of over 250,000 people. In the coming two years, Nyaya Health will significantly scale-up our service delivery at Bayalpata, which involves a multi-factorial approach to system-wide development. Each Summer Intern will work in collaboration with other Nyaya Health staff on various components of service delivery at Bayalpata Hospital, and should expect their work to encompass a wide diversity of roles.
As the Summer Intern, s/he will work with the Nyaya Health team (both Nepali staff and international volunteers), helping to implement and support programs and aspects of the daily functioning of the Hospital. Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
1. Hospital operations and logistics
2. Health technology and database oversight
3. Supply chain, acquisitions, and resource management
4. Oversight and support for the implementation of clinical and public health programs including protocol development, data management, and program coordination
5. Oversight and support for ongoing Nyaya research initiatives, including liasing with international research partners and implementing protocols
APPLICANT INFORMATION
Qualifications
A competitive applicant for the Intern position would include both students and recent graduates of public health or other relevant educational programs, either undergraduate or graduate (MPH, MSc, etc.). The applicant must have a particular interest in, and commitment to, social justice, health care for poor and marginalized populations, and rural health service delivery in developing nations. Previous work experience in developing nation medical contexts is preferred but not required. In line with Nyaya Health’s goal of supporting local and indigenous health system development, preference will be given to Nepalis and/or individuals with Nepali language skills and/or work experience in Nepal, but all are encouraged to apply regardless of background.
Requirements and work expectations
All Summer Interns will be overseen and mentored by the in-country Nyaya Health Executive Director (ED). Interns will be expected to meet with the ED on a one-on-one basis no less than once per week to evaluate their work and identify directions for improvement and program revision. In addition, all Interns will be responsible for submitting weekly Nyaya Health Blog posts (http://blog.nyayahealth.org), which will be reviewed by the ED prior to online posting. At the midpoint and end of the Interns’ tenure, each Intern will be responsible for completing (two) Summer Internship Program Evaluation and Reports, which will be discussed with the Board of Directors in an effort to improve Nyaya’s programming as well as the Internship for future volunteers. Nyaya Health is committed to continually improving its programs, and documentation such as these reports helps to facilitate this.
Financial considerations
Nyaya Health is a non-profit organization that is committed to dedicating 100% of its financial resources to the development and delivery of health services in Nepal. Accordingly, Nyaya’s Summer Interns are expected to be strictly volunteer (as are the entire Board of Directors and many long-term staff). Summer Interns will be expected to pay for all travel expenditures and a per diem cost of living to defray room and board, and facility maintenance costs.
Timeline
Applications will be accepted from December 1st, 2009 and will be considered on a rolling basis until the positions have been filled. Nyaya Health is hoping to identify three (3) qualified candidates following review of initial applications and further interviews. The applicant should expect to start their Internship in mid-June, 2010 and work ideally for between eight (8) and twelve (12) weeks.
